Have you heard of Ikokore?

Maybe you have, but do you know how to cook it?

Before we move on, let me tell you a story.

A female friend of mine was in a relationship with an Ijebu guy. One thing led to another they had a serious argument, the guy left in anger and he refused to reply to my friend’s messages.

Do you know what she did?

She went to his house to prepare this delicious meal (Ikokore). To cut the long story short he gave in to her pleas.



Ikokore is also known as Ifokore is a water yam pottage popularly prepared by the Ijebu people of Ogun state. Ikokore is a meal that makes our loved ones travel miles to get a taste of it.



  1. Water yam
  2. Crayfish
  3. Beef|chicken|mackerel
  4. Palm oil
  5. Seasoning cubes
  6. Fresh Pepper
  7. Onions
  8. Salt

Note; You can choose to include additional ingredients or exclude any ingredient used in this article.



  1. Cut the water yam into halves, peel the skin off, and cut the yam into chunks. Transfer the yam into a bowl of water and rinse properly.

Note; The yam will be slippery once rinsed. You could make use of a paper towel to dry the yam.

  1. Great the yam using the smallest part of the grater. The result should be stretchy.
  2. Add a pinch of salt and seasoning cubes then mix properly. Cover and set aside.
  3. Wash and boil the fish. Remove the bones and pour the liquid stock into a bowl.
  4. Blend the onions and pepper.
  5. Place a pot on medium heat and pour palm oil into it. Allow it to heat for some minutes.
  6. Pour the blended sauce into the pot and add crayfish. Allow frying for some minutes.
  7. Pour your liquid stock into the pot. You should know your liquid stock contain some seasoning so be careful when adding your seasoning. Leave to boil for 5 minutes.
  8. Add the grated water yam to the sauce in small balls. Reduce the heat and leave to cook for 15 minutes.
  9. Add the fish and allow it to cook for 5 minutes.
