In Nigeria, farming is largely based on natural conditions which infer that crops have their ideal weather and seasons. A new study by the West African Network for Peace-building Nigeria (WANEP) NGO has shown Nigeria’s economic productivity could decrease by up to 11% by 2020 and up to 30% by 2050 as a result of climate change.

However, in dealing with our heavy dependence on nature driven agricultural practices the transition from the traditional farming to technical methods using the climate-controlled green housing systems as a more sustainable and high yielding alternative have been very slow.

Over the past four decades, technical changes in agriculture have played a major role as a leading engine of growth and hunger/poverty reduction in many developed countries with large scale technology-focused practices already having global impacts.

For instance, the Netherlands is a small, densely populated country with more than 1,300 inhabitants per square mile. Netherlands is bereft of almost every resource thought to be necessary for large scale agriculture, yet it’s the globe’s number two exporter of food as measured by value, second only to the United States, which has 270 times its landmass. How on Earth have they achieved this?

It’s simply due to the fact that more than half of the nation’s land area is used for climate-controlled farming i.e. green house farming.

These climate-controlled farms enabled a country located a scanty thousand miles from the Arctic Circle to be a global leader in exports of food crops like tomatoes, onions, potatoes, etc.

The variability of climate in Nigeria has been a topical issue in the sustainability of crop yield and production which in turn jeopardizes food security, livelihood, the economy of Nigeria and the world at large.

Suntwist Nigeria Limited is set to achieve large scale greenhouse farming through the ‘Go Green’ project to combat low productivity by providing year-round availability of nutrient-controlled food crops in a bid to reach her agri-business potential and food security goals.

Tomatoes grow as vines or bushes, with vines being best-suited to a greenhouse or inside a mini greenhouse. Growing tomatoes in a greenhouse helps to grow good crops and have higher yields as you can provide controlled temperature and nutrients.

Nigeria’s domestic demand for tomato is 2.3 million tonnes annually while only 1.8 million tonnes is produced. This has led to importation of an average of 150,000 metric tons of tomato concentrate per annum at a staggering value put at $170 million

Hence, there is a need to strengthen Nigeria’s tomatoes industry by way of partnerships with a view to realize the potentials in tomatoes production in Nigeria.
